My Morocco Memories
Cats in the medina, waves in Essaouira, surfing with Ismail, and friends at Vagabond.

The medina and its cats
In Morocco, some people sleep inside handcarts.
The medina is surrounded by walls. Long ago, people only lived inside them. There were shops, schools, and homes inside, and fields and empty land outside. The streets inside the medina are like a maze. Nowadays, people live outside the medina too.
There are more cats in Morocco than you can count. You cannot even count all the cats you see in one day! They sleep on things that are for sale. Sometimes they come onto your lap.
Around Morocco and the fishing port
There are lots of places where you can get henna tattoos. Morocco is far from Japan, but it is fun when you go there.
People in Morocco speak Arabic and French. Sometimes you meet people who speak English too.
Essaouira has a harbour and a fishing port. If you go too early, there are no fish yet. On Monday morning, there are no fish at all. The sardines and squid are delicious!
Sometimes seagulls eat the fish from the fish sellers.
Treasures on the beach
There are lots of beautiful tiles. Lots have fallen into the sea too, and sometimes I find them. I also found shells and stones that are on their way to becoming jewels.
There are horses and camels on the beach, and people who are really good at teaching surfing.
Waves and horses
From the fishing port, you can see the distant waves go BASSHAAN! They look like eruptions.
When you are riding a horse, stroking it feels really nice. Mum’s horse must have been hungry: it ate grass and did not listen at all!
As we rode along the beach, we could see the waves crashing about.
Surfing with Ismail
My heart races when I surf with Ismail. Even when I do well, I think, “Phew, that was scary!” But I go back to him again because I really like him.
Ismail and I stood on the same surfboard and rode a wave together. He knows lots about the sea.
I asked Ismail, “Why do the waves have so many bubbles?” He told me, “Because the wave has broken.”
Ismail let me try kitesurfing too.
Friends at Vagabond
There is a very kind, handsome staff member at a café called Vagabond. His name is Saweil. He gave me a present for my half-birthday.
When I gave Saweil lots of letters, he gave me colouring pages and ice cream.
Some days there are lots of children at Vagabond, and other days there are none at all. I made lots of friends there.
